Unit 2

This issue's Animal story features a very loyal pooch from Tokyo.Japan.

An Ever-loving Akita

(Text 1)A dog is a man's best friend, and professor Ueno of Tokyo Imperial University found one in an Akita puppy he brought home one day in 1924.Named Hachiko, this one-year-old pup followed professor Ueno around like a shadow. Every morning, Hachiko watched the professor leave for work.In the evening,he patiently waited at Shibuya Station for his master to return. The staff at the station were used to seeing Hachiko every day at the same exit, waiting eagerly.

In May of the following year,Professor Ueno suddenly died from a stroke while at work. That evening, the 18-month-old Hachiko waited as usual for the professor, but he never arrived. Day after day,Hachiko returned to wait for that familiar face to step off the evening train. No one could make him understand. Days turned into weeks, weeks to months, and months to years.Eventually, he became a permanent 'resident' of the train station.

In 1932,a newspaper published Hachiko's story and he instantly became a national symbol of loyalty.Hachiko died on 8 March 1935. For 10 years,he never once forgot his owner.

Today, over 75 years later, people still remember his story which has been retold in books, films and even video games.

The puppies were starved and weak when our rescue team arrived.'The pups' owner should be punished for leaving them unattended and without food and water,'said a vet at A-Care Animal Shelter.

The four puppies, named Earth,Wind,Fire and Water, have been nursed back to good health by our medical team.

Text 3 Animal Body Language

Find out how to read your cat's mind!

  1. if it is happy and content,it rolls around on the floor.

  2. if it feels annoyed or disgusted,it shakes its paws.(e.g. when it steps in some water)

  3. If it is angry,it arches its back, flashes its paws and hold its tail upwards

  4. If its ears are upright and turned forwards, this shows it is interested. If the ears are facing back, it is a sign of complete disinterest.

Paws Story

Dear readers:
Welcome to our new column in which we hear our campanions' stories in their
own voices. Here is the story of Spotty.
   --Editor

My first owner called me 'Spotty' because of my spotted coat.I thought she loved me,but I was wrong. If you truly love someone, you don't abandon them on the streets. This is something you should never do to any pet!

Life on the streets was hard.I was hungry and wet all the time, and there were constant food fights.Later, when I was rescued by A-Care,I was just skin and bones. There were cuts on my back and my right eye was infected. Now, I am in good health and waiting to join my newly adopted family.

Visit A-Care website and click 'Adoption' to find out how you can make other cats like me happy,If you want to donate, you can click "Support".Thank you!
