3.Why do we need to manage our emotion?

Discuss the case below:

For example,Mary is upset because she got a low mark on a math test

Case 1a

Mary got a low mark on a math test ----------------------------------------------- She felt depressed. She lost her confidence in studying.

Case 1b

Mary got a low mark on a math test ------------------------------------------------ She felt disappointed but she has the motivation to improve her performance

Which one would you prefer? Why?

Case 1b,because the thought of Mary in case 1b is more positive and she doesn't give up(My opinion)

Why did the same event has two different outcomes?

Belief in case 1a:She thinks she must have good grades or she is worthless.

Belief in case 1b:She thinks she has the potential to gain higher marks as long as she works harder.

Dicuss the case below:

John needs to change the school as his family moved to Yuen Long.

John needs to change the school as his family moved to Yuen Long. ---------------------------------------------- He felt depressed as he lost his friends
John needs to change the school as his family moved to Yuen Long. ------------------------------------------------------ He felt upset but he was awaiting to meet new friends

Sometimes, we cannot change the situation but we can change our mind to face the difficulty. Negative emotion can be the motivation for us to work harder.

How to manage our emotions?

How we think(cognition),how we feel (emotion and affect),and how we act(behavior)are all interacted and going together. For example, our thoughts influence our feelings and behavior, our feelings influence our behavior and vice versa. One of the methods to manage our emotions is cognition therapy(認知治療)---The ABC technique.

A major aid in cognitive therapy is what Albert Ellis called the ABC of irrational Beliefs.

In this ABC model,"A","B" and "C" stand for:

A---activating event.

E.g. I didn't get invited to the party to which my friend was invited.

B---Beliefs.Our explanation about why the situation happened.

E.g."I am such a loser,nobody likes me."

C---Consequences.The feelings and behaviors that our belief causes.

E.g.Feels sad, even depressed. Has no motivation to go jogging and eats a whole box of chocolate despite her focus on healthier living.
