Dear students,

I am delighted to announce that our school's annual Dress Special Day (DSD) will be held on Friday, 21 October 20__ .As with previous years, we are holding this event to raise money for a local charity group. Teachers and students with the most interesting look on DSD will be awarded certificates for their efforts.

Charity Club is once again organizing this year's DSD. Club members wearing fun caps will be visiting classrooms throughout the week of 3-7 October to collect donations from participants. Each participant will be given a special badge to wear on DSD. Students without DSD badges must wear school uniform to school.

The minimum donation is HK $ 20 per student. All proceeds will go to KELY Support Group, a charity organisation targeting young people in Hong Kong. I hope all students will join and support DSD. With your active support, there is a good chance we can beat last year's record amount of HK$ 6890.

I look forward to joining you and the teachers for a fun-filled DSD.

Dr Sandra Yu

Principal

Is it "Dress Special Day" or "Dress Casual Day"?

The idea of raising money for charity by dressing casually on a work or school day was first introduced in the United States. It was brought to Hong Kong in 1993 by the Community Chest, and has been popular ever since. People are happy that, for a small donation, they can take part in a meaningful event and dress however they like to school or work. The event is named Dress Casual Day.

By 2006, work wear had become less formal .To encourage people to join the event, the draw changed to having participants show up for work in unusual clothing, e.g. pyjamas or diving suits. The event was thus renamed Dress Special Day. However, in 2011, the event's name was changed back to Dress Casual Day.

Over the years, this popular Community Chest event has raised million of dollars. The money is used to fund charities in support of the local communities and the disadvantaged in society , such as the poor, the elderly and the health impaired.

Tips for an outstanding look on DSD

"I've had two very good DSD experiences so far. I think it's because I had everything planned out beforehand. Some of my friends just "made do" with anything that came their way on the morning of DSD. That's no fun! You have to get into the festive mood of DSD to get the best out of it."

Here are some tips to help you stand out , look good and have fun on DSD.

1.Dress to show who you are, but take a step further. For example, if you love hip-hop music, let your clothes reflect this. Get into character in a pair of baggy jeans and a big T-shirt with a powerful slogan. Throw in a baseball cap and a big-faced watch, and you get the look of a hip-hop singer. If you are an NBA fan, an oversized jersey printed with the name of your favourite team or player and a cap will serve you well.

2.It's all about fun. Forget that "not-looking-very-dressed-up" look. Dare to get into something a little silly or clownish to school because you can get away with it on DSD. I've worn really crazy outfits such as dungarees covered in big polka pots, and a striped T-shirt with matching shorts. I even hand-painted my rain boots with stripes! They were all really crazy clothes, but they matched my character and my mood that day. I guess that was why I got the most votes on both occasions.

3.Remember: there is no set rule for the best look on DSD. The important thing is to enjoy the experience! After all, DSD is about having fun, isn't it?
